School Profile
The National High School of Chu Van An (Hanoi)
History
Chu Van An Special High School is the oldest high school in Hanoi. It was founded on December 12, 1908 by the decree of Governor-General Klobakowki of Indochina with its initial name CollÌge du Protectorat. The school later changed its name to LycÐe du Protectorat in 1931. The students were taught mostly in French; Vietnamese was considered a minor language. Nevertheless, the students of Chu Van An still read and studied the famous literary works of Vietnamese authors, to protect their native language and culture.
Under the French domination, many students took part in revolutionary activities. Many of them became war heroes such as Ngo Gia Tu, Pham Van Dong, Nguyen Van Cu, etc.
During the struggle for independence from France, in the years of 1943, 1944, and the beginning of 1945, the school evacuated to Ninh Binh.
In 1945, Vietnam was finally independent. A new page of history was opened on June 12, 1945 when the school was renamed Chu Van An, after a famous scholar in the Tran Dynasty.
In 1946, President Ho Chi Minh first visited Chu Van An High School. Also in that year, the French returned to invade Vietnam. The war broke out on December 19, 1946.
In 1947, the school divided into two branches, one in Phu Tho and the other stayed in Hanoi, in the heart of the enemy.
In 1954, after defeating the French, America declared war on Vietnam. During the war, Uncle Ho paid many visits to the school. In the struggle for freedom, many students and teachers joined the army and died heroically.
In 1995, the Prime Minister signed a decree to set up a high quality center at the school.
Location
The school is located on the bank of West Lake, across the street from the city's Botanical Gardens. It is a beautiful campus with many huge shady trees, stone benches, and buildings of French architectural designs. It is also the largest high school campus in Hanoi, with a big football field and basketball court. The school has an English Lab, a French Lab, a Science Lab, and computer rooms. Chu Van An also has a high-quality cafeteria which serves a variety of foods. In the future, the school will be expanded to have a dormitory for students, which will be highly convenient for those who come to study from the suburbs or from other provinces.
